Blood Clotting Symptoms Should not be Neglected: Be Careful!

Blood Clotting Symptoms Should not be Neglected: Be Careful!
April 11, 2024

Clotting of blood is a serious disorder of the blood that not only affects the proper functioning of the circulatory system of the body but also leads to several impairments of the cardio-vascular functions. In a natural condition, the blood clots after a while if there is a cut or a wound in your body. But in an abnormal circulatory condition, the blood does not flow smoothly through your veins, and it gets clots within the blood veins and arteries. This abnormal condition, known as ‘thrombosis’ can lead to severe cardiovascular diseases in your body if left untreated. This abnormal condition requires a good amount of time to develop in your body and it gives some prior symptoms that should not be ignored.

What is Blood Clotting or Thrombosis?

A blood clot is a lump of red blood cells combined that obstructs the smooth flow of blood through the channels of your arteries and veins. These blood clots can develop in parts of the body, including hands, legs, lungs, arms, or even heart. Blood clots in hearts, mainly in the arteries develop in the form of a plaque-like substance that is formed with a combination of lipid and deposited minerals and limits the smooth flow of blood through the heart. This kind of thrombosis or irregular coagulation of blood can be fatal and can also cause untimely death.

Reasons Behind Irregular Blood Clotting

There may be several reasons that are responsible for the development of irregular blood clotting in your body. These causes depend upon several factors like the blood type, condition of the circulation system, and so on. According to several experts and cardiologists the main reasons behind the irregular clotting of blood are:

  • A disease or any kind of severe internal infectionin a portion of the body in which the coagulation forms
  • Immobility or lack of movement
  • Breaking of joints and bone
  • Inherited or genetic disorders that affect how your blood clots
  • Obesity
  • A condition called anti- phospholipid syndrome
  • Abnormalities and disorders in the heart- arteriosclerosis, heart arrhythmia,
  • Effects of Covid- 19 or Coronavirus
  • Smoking or surgery
  • Autoimmune disorders
  • IBS or irritable bowel syndrome
  • Side effects of certain medications, like birth control pills or external and artificial hormonal treatment

Types Of Blood Clots

Blood clots can form in several parts of the body into the veins and blood vessels. Types of blood clots are determined by the place where the blood has formed the coagulation. Some common types of blood clots are:

Arterial blood clot

Blood clots are known to occur in several portions of the heart, including the arteries, known as an arterial clot, which can lead to a fatal health condition called an arterial embolism, causing coldness, sudden lowering of pulse rate, weakness, pain, and paralysis.

Venous clot

A venous clot is a blood clot that develops in the blood veins and disrupts the functions of the circulatory system. It causes several abnormal health conditions like venous embolism and causes several life-threatening symptoms such as swelling, pain, irregular cramps, and discoloration or paleness of skin.

What are the most common symptoms of a Blood Clot or Thrombosis?

As discussed, thrombosis or irregular clotting of blood can take place at any portion of your body and can result in lethal conditions of your overall health if you do not seek professional help. Before developing into a serious condition, blood clotting gives your body prior symptoms that should not be ignored. Some of those symptoms are as follows:

Thrombosis symptoms in the abdomen:

According to experts and several doctors, irregular coagulation of blood takes place in your abdomen and if you develop thrombosis, particularly veinous thrombosis in your stomach, then the symptoms will vary from person to person. In some people, the symptoms may not be very strongly visible and so there are chances of the disorder getting easily ignored. Some people will develop visible symptoms and once they notice the symptoms, they should seek professional help as soon as possible.

When thrombosis or blood clotting occurs in the abdomen and parts of the abdomen, it becomes a serious health issue because, abdominal blood clots often penetrate deep into the veins, leading to the development of deep vein thrombosis.

Some of the common symptoms of abdominal blood clotting are listed below:

  • severe pain in the stomach and many parts of the abdomen that continues in a repetitive pattern
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • black colored stools with traces of blood
  • diarrhea
  • bloating or swelling in the abdomen
  • A condition called ascites develops in the body by which the fluid inside the stomach combines together.

It is important to keep in mind that the above-mentioned symptoms are considered the common symptoms of blood coagulation. But these can be the causes of other diseases as well, for example, food poisoning, stomach upset, and certain types of infections in the stomach or any other. If you notice the development of these symptoms in your body, rush to a registered medical practitioner.

Symptoms of a blood clot in the brain or the nervous system:

Our brain and the nervous system are the most important systems that control the major functioning of the body. Blood clots in the brain or in the nervous system develop mainly due to a stroke, commonly known as brain stroke. Brain strokes can result due to the development of blood clots either in the brain or in any part of the body. Brain stroke is a severe health condition that can be life-threatening.

During the development of blood clots in the brain or in the midst of the channels of the nervous system, then enough blood and oxygen fail to reach the important centers of the brain, and this causes brain stroke, resulting in cerebral or conditions like hypoxia and can even cause death.

When your brain develops a blood clot, causing brain stroke, your body starts showing up some symptoms that should not be neglected. Some such symptoms of blood clotting or thrombosis are:

  • Paralysis of the limbs or the entire body- an important symptom of brain stroke and development of blood clots in brain, sometimes paralysis occurs in one portion of the body, for example in the right half, the left half, or only the hands or legs. But n severe cases, the entire body can get paralyzed.
  • Numbness or weakness in several parts of the body and difficulty in the movements of different body parts like arms, face, and leg, especially on portionof the body or may be the entire body
  • Difficulty in listening, speaking, or understanding others
  • Slurred speech and fumbling
  • Confusion, disorders like disorientation, or lack of responsiveness- an acute condition when in your body, information does not get registered into the brain easily
  • Sudden changes in the patterns of general behavior, especially increase in mood swings, characterized by sudden changes in mental state, irritation, and agitation
  • Gradual blurring of vision- impairment of vision causing darkening or hazing of eyesight and difficulty in seeing with either one eye or both eyes. Problems like double vision can also occur, including optical problems like loss of vision, retinal pigmentation, or macular degeneration.
  • Trouble doing simple and regular activities- moving hands, walking or even moving legs become difficult tasks to perform, because the brain remains almost disoriented
  • Loss of balance- mental coordination of body balance gets disrupted, leading to falling
  • Dizziness and weakness
  • Severe, sudden headache with an unknown cause
  • Seizures
  • Gastrointestinal problems, including sensations of nausea or vomiting

Just remember, if the above-mentioned symptoms occur, even for once, do not ignore them. Contact your medical caregiver immediately, because if these symptoms are avoided, then they may cause further damage to your physical and mental health in the later ages. It is necessary to get a doctor’s support and to treat properly what disease these symptoms indicate.

Symptoms of blood clot in the lungs:

Apart from the abdomen, brain, and nervous system, blood clots may also develop in the lungs that are responsible for causing diseases like pulmonary embolism or PE. This is a serious respiratory condition, and it is warned by some prior symptoms such as:

  • Chest pain
  • Palpitations, or abnormally increased heart rate
  • Breathing problems causing acute breathlessness
  • Profuse coughing and bloodcome out with cough

Symptoms of blood clot in the heart:

Blood clots when start to develop in the heart and arteries or in any portion of the circulatory system, your body is very much susceptible to developing conditions like a heart attack. The symptoms of this condition are as follows.

  • Pain in the chest
  • Lightheadedness
  • Difficulties in breathing, i.e., shortness of breath
  • Pain in the arm, neck, back, or jaw
  • Profuse sweating
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Heartburn
  • High heart rates or palpitations
